November 24

In the night, the rain came. Collette had dreams of fantastically bad rain-wind storms in the plains.

In the morning, the rain still fell.

Back over to the house…

Dad and Mom were leaving to get Mom’s driver’s license renewed.

Collette tutored and made a rainbow layered Jell-O salad for the following afternoon: grape, blueberry, lime, lemon, orange, watermelon, and cherry… after she had worked as short order cook for breakfast.

Carrie-Bri was feeling well enough to give Puck a haircut while he watched Blue’s Clues Thanksgiving Special.

Joe, who had just finished another art project of a continuous line squiggled across an entire canvas, and Francis, were off to find a place to drop off old steel.

Rose prepared herself for an interview the following Thursday.

And Linnea-Irish participated with Collette in speaking only Portuguese to one another all day.

…And Snuggles had killed another shrew.

Meanwhile, Mom told of her time with Mandarin’s mother, where they went to O’Leary’s Pub for reubens and fried pickles…

“Mom had a Guinness last night,” Dad teased.

…And Mandarin’s mother had told Mom about growing up in South City and of the woman, a descendent of the Falstaff brewers, who legendarily had a coffin in her basement.

And Mom had been given a birthday present of a book of St. Louis nostalgia and a pack of sourheads.

Outside, the rain was pouring. Carrie noted the rather enormous mud circle that had grown around the tree outside.

Later, the thunder crashed as the rain rained even more so.

Carrie and Linnea wrapped the just arrived Christmas presents.

Dad emptied the ash from the wood burning stove.

And the boys, who had just returned from dropping off the copper piping for $33, had come back and then out again for a load of firewood, which they commenced to stack the whole lot on the patio, in the downpour.

“You guys picked a beautiful day to do this,” Dad joked with them from the sliding door.

“Yeah!” Francis replied with a grin. “Wanna come join us?”

Mom and Dad had also brought back a Christmas popcorn trio: butter, white cheddar, and caramel.

As Collette carefully poured the last layer of Jell-O into the glass dish, ready to go into the fridge…

“Francis, open the door for me, please.”

And Francis opened the oven door.

Meanwhile…

Carrie was feeling well enough to also smash Rose once more, like the good old days.

“What was that squeak?” Carrie asked. “Was that your lungs?”

Carrie then left to make a cup of Egyptian licorice tea.

And Dad went out for what he facetiously called, The Devil’s Run. 6.66 miles.

After cheddar celery rice soup for dinner, OLeif had returned from work and Joe and Rose were making plans with friends for the evening.

Back home…

Collette made a strawberry pretzel salad and braided up her hair for the night.

OLeif made Israeli cardamom coffee and set about to writing three of five term papers, for one class.

A haircut for OLeif.

And the rain continued to fall. And the thunder crashed.
