Off to Coffee
Saturday, May 12, 2007
Collette found herself sleeping in to nearly ten o’clock that morning. She could count on two hands the number of times in her life that she had done so. Shortly after waking, she saw off OLeif to another photo shoot, this time for his dad.
In random things of the day, Collette discovered that one only needed 48 hours notice to be married in Gibraltar.
And Diana had landed a murder case for her next article. She had been given permission to interview the suspect by herself. Creepy.
That night it was off to another coffeehouse.
Joe informed Collette through Mom earlier in the day that Puck was expected to sing a solo during the performance. Apparently he was to be quite the highlight of the night, according to his Uncle Joe.
“Puck already gave me his suit measurements,” Collette could hear him joke on the other end of the phone. “So tell him that I have his tux here waiting for him. Tell him to avoid the press and cameras when he gets here. They’re setting out a red carpet for him. And tell him to bring his bongo drums.”
Collette could only imagine what life would be like once Puck learned how to sing and talk.
The coffeehouse ended up becoming very full that night: Silverspoons, Hobcoggins, Snicketts, Souths, Tecumsehs, Buckles, Englishs, Molly… And Adam asked to hold Puck and was able to do so between card games with the other boys.
OLeif went off to order an iced steamer (whatever that was) and returned with an iced latte for some reason. Collette had still never ordered anything from the coffeehouse. Maybe one day… Even Linnea had a hot chocolate while she was there. Collette just kept reminding herself that almost anything served, was full of caffeine.
And while Bluebell held Puck, she told them about Old Blue graduating. Interestingly enough, he and Cashmere would be living in Cedar Rapids; he would be working for the same company that had hired Dad right before he and Mom had married. They were even living in the same apartment complex where Mom and Dad had lived. 27 years later…
The sun sank red that night.
On the way home, OLeif drove them through New Town to see the fountains where Fernando and Polly were to be married the following Saturday night. The town had already grown in size. A small cathedral was also being built at the end of one of the canals, given the very disenchanting name of “New Town Chapel”.
“I still get a feeling of doomsday about this place,” OLeif said as they drove past the inscription-less obelisk at the head of the town. “Like a tornado or a flood might come and wipe it out. Or giant killer ants.”
It sometimes did seem to have the appearance of a set on the Twilight Zone.
