Office Work

Collette was in the office all day for Forget-me-Not. And she remembered to pack her bento for lunch.

First, over at the house… Puck was busy making his initial rounds. This included trying on a pair of Carrie’s flip-flops and Linnea’s flip-flops.

The sun is up, Sun,” he said. “It was a baby sun. And now it’s not a baby sun anymore.”

It had been a very long time since Collette had been in the office on a Tuesday: Tuesdays, which were for staff meetings.

Are things just as exciting and crazy here as they were before?” Judah asked her.

Oh, yes, those good old days. Team Ivy-Collette. Good times in Collette’s history.

The day went so fast, Collette realized that it was two o’clock and she had not eaten lunch.

So instead, when Francis and Mom picked her up, she ate a cold wedge of lasagna with her fingers, which somehow worked quite nicely as a sandwich, as she hitched a ride down the road for an iced tea for Mom, to the Bing Shop for Francis, and then to choir to pick up Linnea.

Linnea was excited to show Mandarin her recent purchase of a banana yellow dress with a bit of a ruffle under the skirt and ruching on the bodice. It was a sweet little dress that she could hopefully wear swing dancing with Joe on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Mom told Collette about planned revisions for the hall bath and of the neighbor’s addition of six chickens (two of which apparently had gotten loose the previous day), blackberry vines, and apple trees. Linnea had also been hoping that Dad would allow her to raise chickens in their own yard.

Back at the house, Puck had enjoyed a super time with his Sun, where they had made ‘cookies’ together (which had turned into a sort of set of pancakes as some key ingredients had been missing).

He was walking around with his ‘picnic basket’ and his ‘pet church’, a small wood church which had once been used as a candle holder.

It’s my baby church,” he said.

Then Carrie left for Forest Park with Lucia, Mom and Francis took Linnea to American Heritage Girls, and OLeif returned to sit on the porch with Joe and eat a little dinner while Collette played Puck’s version of ‘hide-and-seek’ in the yard with him.

You’re going back to seminary?” Joe asked OLeif.

Yup,” said OLeif with a grin. “This fall. And once I get my Masters, you have to promise not to tell anyone that I never got my Bachelors first.”

Ok,” Joe replied. “But you have to give me fifty bucks or I’ll tell Jesus.”

It was a beautiful night. They drove through Collette’s favorite glade on the ride home: all gold and rolls of green brambles and forested patches were white and brown horses grazed together.

Then home for BallyK and Ding-Dongs.

And Puck had a thank you note from Baby Hesed in the mail, which made him very happy.
