On the Menu
Every morning it’s the same thing. My second alarm clock is never necessary. Because my first alarm clock has already woken me by crawling all over my shoulders, head, and face, whining for either yogurt, or my phone to watch claymation Spiderman.
Meanwhile, my old knee injury had been acting up again that week. Wednesday I learned why – rain was back on the menu again.
So was hot cheesy pizza bread in the cafeteria. Big hit with the kids, less so with the teachers and staff. But they were gobbled up quickly by three shifts of hungry grade school students between the hours of eleven and twelve.
Back at the Big House, Yali was wrapping up his own lunch. After the third hot dog, I decided to hit the brakes.
“HOT. DOG? HOT. DOG?” he pleaded.
“Son, that is too much hot dog.”
But then he remembered what Carrie had already given him earlier. “QUESO!” he thundered.
So I checked the fridge to browse the cheese department. He didn’t go hungry.
Six kids spilled out on the playground during carpool, me more or less supervising all of them, between the raindrops, which they never seem to mind. Once Puck was left with just Yali and the girls, he decided to take a break from the girl talk and hiked back up to the shelter of the awning to read through his latest favorite – “The Biggest Book of Search & Find” – which we had found on Amazon for a penny.
