One More Round

I guess that doorway arm trick left a good impression on Puck. Before he left for school, it was, “DO I HAVE TIME TO DO THE DOOR TRICK BEFORE WE LEAVE?”

He didn’t. More fun for later.

The ant farm, meanwhile, was in business on the kitchen table. Although half the squad seemed to have passed in the night, or maybe during their travels in the mailing tube.

I have to say, there are few things more sad in the world than seeing a little boy stare worriedly into the recesses of a plastic ant farm and ask, “Has my ant farm failed, Mom?”

A last minute change in plans afforded the opportunity to sit in the school lobby and catch up on everything rolling around my to-do list. Three hours of it, in fact. And a container of refried beans with a side of colby jack cheese. That’s how to take care of a Tuesday morning.

About half an hour later, I found myself plunked in the middle of the physician’s waiting room for the very last adoption-required physical before the long haul south. Finally. I may have cheated a little that morning by upping my usual salt intake about six times over to make my blood pressure look more snazzy. But other than that, A+.

Back home later that day, Puck went outside to shoot some hoops. I was surprised at his increased skill, considering we’ve never owned a basketball post. But the neighbors do, so I guess that’s one way to do it. I could hear the old thump-thump of basketball on cement through open windows while I cleaned up the kitchen.

Honeysuckle was back in abundance, crawling all over the yard fence. If I had a better sense of smell, I would appreciate it even more. Honeysuckle and thunderstorms, best signs of spring in this little old neighborhood throughout the years.

Rose joined us after hours – almost at the end of a very cold ballgame up in Cleveland – for Domino’s pizza (nothing like celebrating the end of adoption physicals with cheesy wheels of bacon, chicken, and parmesan, with a side of cold apple juice, of course) and a round of “Chef’s Table” on Netflix.
