Organizing the Week

Collette hadn’t fallen asleep till nearly midnight, so when Puck marched in at 6:45, it still felt a little too early…
“Mama,” he said. “I need paper and tape to makes Valentines.”
Shortly later, she heard rummaging in the hallway…
“I made a studio!” he said very importantly.
This studio was mostly old drawer knobs and small bits of tools and miscellaneous metal pieces set on tissue squares on the floor.
After breakfast, Puck’s first Module of studies was spent in word-memory games.
“Oh, good boy, good boy!” he congratulated himself upon correctly pairing words together.
He also thought it was very funny to draw everlasting “E’s”, which looked more like railroad tracks than anything else.
During the morning, Collette pieced together OLeif’s wardrobe for the next twelve years. Danner boots guaranteed to last a lifetime. Duluth pants and shirts made of fire hose. Finally, OLeif-proof outerwear.
Gus enjoyed some “jellyfish” at lunch (i.e. sliced hot dog segments strung through with spaghetti, then cooked).
2:53 arrived with a walk around the neighborhood for Collette and Puck. Fresh air, BBQ, radio from garages, zoysia, shell chimes… Puck wondered what had happened to “the man in the weeds with the knives”…
“Probably he went to the police shop.”
When they returned, Puck kicked his orange ball around the yard while Collette sat on the patio reading a biography of Alice Roosevelt, after which she joined Puck in his game of bounce-the-ball-onto-the-roof-of-the-shed. And somewhere in the afternoon, Puck said thoughtfully…
“I feel bad for Trooper, that poor old chap.”
OLeif returned by 5:30 after an hour of study at the library. Shewermas were served to the boys for dinner. Then Puck got the giggles with his dad after they read mountains of books, and Puck tried out some silly dance.
Collette wound down the evening with a brief lecture on Thorium, and The African Queen.
