Park & Custard

Saturday, August 23, 2008

In the morning, Collette and Puck joined OLeif at work. While he sat at his computer, Collette bounced a large blue rubber ball to Puck, who laughed and carried it in front of him, unable to see where he was going.
After Puck had a long deep nap that afternoon, everyone piled in the green Honda for the park. Puck loved being outside. After Collette had rubbed his chubby rosy face with sunscreen, he sat still for Collette to put on his pirate sunnies and his zoo hat from the English family. Then he charged for the playground, Collette following with his sippy. Everything was fascinating to him at such an age. He ran around the rubber matting beneath the elaborate jungle gym, then took off for the green below. OLeif and Collette led him on the trail by the woods where he found a sword out of an old stick. He waved it around grandly and took off on a trot down the path.
After the park, OLeif treated them to Woogie’s frozen custard. Collette got the usual cookie dough (with a lot of cookie dough). Puck occasionally asked for a taste while he, instead, was given fruit puffies. Collette dipped a few of his puffs in her custard, which he greatly enjoyed. He sat on the rubber seat of the table on the cement patio, swinging his legs, watching the other customers at the other table.
The day was hot, muggy, a typical late afternoon in August. Carrie, however, would be happy.
“This is my seventeenth straight day of rain!” she had moaned on Friday afternoon.
As Saturday’s games came to a close, the United States Women’s Basketball team had won gold as had both 4 by 400 relay teams, Men’s and Women’s, for the U.S.
