Peaches, Goats, & Karen Carpenter
Saturday, August 5, 2006
Collette woke that morning with her eye still bloodshot from two days before to find that the oven had been left on all night at 400 degrees. She hardly had to turn it on again for cinnamon rolls for breakfast. And with that, it was off to the peach orchards with the family (minus Carrie who was at a concert, and OLeif, who had to design the SCCYO website).
In the end, they rather picked a basket of peaches that had already been transported from another Illinois river farm. And Rose took pictures of the bunnies and goats (one of which occasionally escaped the fence) while Joe looked over the marbles, and Mom purchased apple butter and horehound candy for Dad. And Rose was once again inspired to raise a heard of fainting goats.
On the way back, Linnea made her souvenir chattering teeth sing along to the Oldies…
“Somebody to lean on…”
There was also Italian custard and the Scottish shop on the way back in Old Saint Charles in the almost cool afternoon.
Meanwhile, one of Wally’s siblings had once again lovingly sabotaged his away message on IM:
“I am a princess, and I love roses and fluffy things!!!”
The afternoon brought a drive around town where OLeif went into the post office for stamps and was stopped on the way out by two Mormons who chatted with him for a good 25 minutes about their Book of Mormon.
And while OLeif enjoyed a guys’ night at Shepherd’s for a movie, Collette spent her evening with the family and pizzas where Rose had just finished photographing cicadas near the old penny mound. And there was much talk and things while Rose studied and Dad sang along with Karen Carpenter on the PBS documentary.
And the Silverspoons were in Texas visiting family for the week.
