Pumpkin Head
Tuesday, September 6th, 2005
Labor Day had been spent with a morning for a pleasant drive out to the country, just Collette and OLeif. And the afternoon and evening was at the house. The Combs came over with Grandma, minus Linus who was at the baseball game, against the Cubs. Grandma Snicketts also came, as well as the Silverspoons. They all waited for their arrival and Collette snacked on several of Rose’s strawberries and sugar, all plump red and juicy.
After the party had come, Uncle Mo discussed his six-minute laser eye surgery, and that he now had 20-20, which would likely go down to 20-15 after awhile.
And Curly went around with a Wonderbread hot dog bun bag on his head. Carrie chased Lucia with dead worms on her badminton racket and Lucia screamed. Joe received a disco ball from Grandma Combs.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the day had been the disaster with Aunt Petunia’s hair. After all, hadn’t her hair just looked like a pumpkin before she arrived (the dye company having placed the wrong color in the box)? They were all rather disappointed when they drove up, to find that her hair had been stripped back to normal by that time. She had been in tears though, after the first coloring. It was probably a similar episode to when Carrie’s hair had turned green at the beauty salon.
But all this aside, there were other things afoot. The Hurricane disaster was monumental and sickening. It was more as if animals were feeding off each other by the reports which came through from the Superdome, yet another peek into the vileness of sin.
And in other news, Mercy was considering moving to Samara, Russia, where Bob was leaving for nine months for his first assignment to teach English as a second language. The things that happened to Mercy… Mr. Pretzel said he might even accompany her and visit Germany and Austria where he first met Mrs. Pretzel (back when both were in the army). But first, Mercy would be moving back to her old home for a month or two while Bob was in Denver training for four weeks.
