Punch & Cupcakes

After Yali’s 4:30AM wake-up call, he managed to fall asleep in our bed again after his bottle, which meant I didn’t have to sit on five hours’ sleep after all. I joined him for the extended nap while Oxbear scooted off to South City for breakfast with his buddies and Puck joined the iPad for further Minecraft inspirations.

A couple of hours later, Yali sat in his high chair, zooming his empty banana peel through the air like a rocket ship. Now that he realizes there is always a surplus of food, he’s slowed the intake by experimenting with imagination and the dinner plate.

We didn’t start our official anniversary outing until sometime after three o’clock that afternoon. The boys were deposited at the Silverspoon house for a few hours – including jumping into a vast pile of blankets and pillows at the bottom of the basement steps – while we drove down to The Loop for a brief “lupper”, which included “pizza nachos” and a club sandwich at Cicero’s. We usually make up these dates as we go along.

What Oxbear had planned on in advance, however, was Jilly’s cupcakes. We stopped for a box of four fat ones on the way back out and split them up at the Silverspoon’s right about the time the Cardinals won their 83rd game of the season.

The evening probably could have ended better given the occasion we were celebrating and all. Because of course the top drawer of the boys’ dresser would have been left open – I’m always closing drawers and doors after these boys – when I walked into the dark room and bent down too fast to retrieve Puck’s jams from the bottom drawer.

WHAM!

Blood streaming down my hands as I held onto my nose. The impact left my teeth and eyes ringing, but the swelling wasn’t too bad. And here I’d always thought they’d been exaggerating in the movies with the amount of blood involved when someone got a punch to the nose. Now I know what it feels like to take one to the old kisser. Anyway, Oxbear found me an Advil an hour later and we watched Seinfeld to close out our 11th anniversary celebration. There are worse ways to celebrate, even if I won’t be able to smell my roses for the next day or two.

CARDINALS:

3.5 games up on Pittsburgh: 83 and 46; 33 games remaining.
