Reformation Sunday.
From dawn to dusk, the rain held back, and all was quietly warm until evening. Sunlight hit the windows during the service and shone off the Sola banners as they were escorted to the front of the sanctuary by the young junior high kids. When Frances’ turn came, he dashed off from his seat and soldierly marched the red “Sola Gratia” to the front.
Sunday School had been typical, with every child’s answer to every question by the end of the lesson being: “pie”.
By that time, OLeif decided that they had had enough of Jonah for one day, particularly when they all insisted that Jonah had been swallowed (not by a fish) but by a whale, because “Veggie Tales said so”.
Lunch was fajitas at the Silverspoon household, followed by ice cream and pie. It was a rather lazy afternoon, so while Theodore and OLeif talked about the Church, Denae and Collette watched the pandemonium of the Cardinal’s victory parade and the tens of thousands of red fans and celebration inside Busch Stadium (where Mom had opted not to attend after all). And the boys plunked around on Izzy’s new double base.
Night came on where Jimmy, OLeif, Collette, Joe, Ben-Hur, Augustus, Rose, Molly, and Samantha drove two cars down to Kirk of the Hills for the Reformation service, followed by punch and cookies.
Dad and Mom had also brought Frances and Linnea who waved at the youth crowd (all of whom did arrive late and sat in the balcony) while Frances and Linnea took almost front-row seats near the enthusiastic worship team.
Apparently the African American worship band had made a favorable impression on the carload that OLeif and Collette brought back home.
“That was awesome,” Molly said.
“They were all like your mom,” Augustus laughed. “We should have music like that at our church. Yeah.”
“Yeah, Judah likes that kind of music,” Rose thought aloud. “Maybe we should rent a black choir for him.”
That was enough to start the giggles.
And Augustus told them all about what he did while driving over to church.
“I drove over all these rocks in the road. I thought they were Styrofoam. But it was limestone or something. And I was drinking Gatorade at the time… and it went everywhere.”
They arrived back in time for OLeif, Collette, Joe, Rose, Molly, and Samantha to meet Magnus at the coffeehouse. So the root beers and the chicken salad were taken out for the crew and there was the usual chatter while Samantha talked to Jesse James on her cell phone. And the evening was relatively uneventful otherwise.
A half-moon shone down on a very happy city of St. Louis.
