In which a quiet Saturday of vegetation is spent following a long, rather warm week of activity…
When Collette opened her eyes that morning, Puck’s face was staring back.
“Mama. I already got dressed.”
One of the shirts from Rose, and the shorts. He was ready to go.
OLeif started the morning by cleaning out the gutters, with Puck helping as able.
The during breakfast, Puck had more questions…
“Who made God?”
“No one did. He was always there.”
“Mama. How did God get here?”
“He didn’t come here. He was always here, forever and always.”
“What?!”
Apparently this was revelation to Puck.
“Do you want your fountain pen back in the box, Mama? Does it put water on the bad guys?”
“Mama, Grandma Combs prays for me every day.”
When they arrived at the Silverspoon’s, Gloria took Puck with her to get a hair trim. And not long later, Theodore and Gloria departed for a wedding for one of the old choir girls who was marrying a Wash-U graduate from the Silverspoon’s church, and where Izzy was photographer for the day.
As the afternoon progressed, Puck was standing in the pantry.
“Want some soda, Daddy?” he asked, picking up the 2-liter.
“No, thanks, buddy.”
“OK. Whatever you say, Daddy.”
As the storm approached, Puck peddled furiously around the deck in the outgrown tricycle.
Thunder crackled.
That was pretty much it.
Back from the wedding they came with bags of Hershey’s kisses, and onto the porch for Gloria to repair items with her sewing box and chat with the neighbor.
Izzy returned from the English Country Dancing reception around five o’clock, to introduce his tarantula to Puck.
On the ride home, Puck, who was lacking in sleep, was still not too tired for further questions.
“So. Daddy. You like sad music and happy music and creepy music, right?”
“Right.”
“Good. I’m gonna write, write that down when we get home.”
“That’s a good idea. You should ask Mama what kind of music she likes too.”
“OK. Mama, you like pretty music, right?”
And then later…
“Mama. I’m going to go to my graduation, right?”
And more thunder as eight o’clock approached…
And green and gold with heavy rain.
