Red

Tuesday woke to Carrie scaring Linnea awake with a hideous skeleton mask on her face from two Halloweens ago. She had made quite the statement that Halloween, all in black platforms, a billowing black cape in the wind and nothing but black on her, except for the red face.
Linnea popped open her eyes and gasped.
“Carrie!” she exclaimed. “You know I don’t like seeing red skeleton faces in the morning!”
Carrie got a good kick out of that. And while Mom prepared drop biscuits for breakfast, Collette and Linnea began touch-up painting the basement’s walls. OLeif called during that time while music was roaring all over the house – from Renaissance in the basement, to Indie rock in the dining room, to 70’s hits in the kitchen.
Later that day, Mom, Linnea, and Collette ran errands all over town. This included purchasing some Clinique products for Mom and Grandma Snicketts at the mall, picking up Wishbone tapes at the library, looking over Flexsteel furniture and fabric samples at an old family-run furniture store in Old Saint Charles, and stopping to sit on a bench outside J. Noto’s with strawberry and mocha custard. Meanwhile, Carrie shopped at Borders and Plato’s Closet with Elizabeth and came back with a flashy pair of lipstick red pumps.
“Check out these babies,” she said proudly, stomping her model walk through the kitchen.
Of course, on anyone else, they would have looked ridiculous. But Carrie had that rare knack of pulling such things off splendidly and stylishly.
And while Francis was off spending the night at Izzy’s, there were several new Wishbone episodes to watch and Dad and Collette moved around the furniture in the basement after eating dinner at Culver’s. And Collette missed OLeif.
Ah, summer activities…
