Reformation Sunday
Sunday was brimful – top to end. This began with Puck being particularly loud for the service, including all the pomp of a brass quintet and regal banners of the “solas”, two of which were carried into the sanctuary by Francis and Linnea.
After the service, Collette carted Rose and Puck to Target where Collette received a flu shot – first customer of the day. Rose was happy to find out (after being joined by Mom and Dad, Francis and Linnea), that their insurance was not accepted at that particular Target for flu shots. She had several more days to avoid being administered the needle. Collette, however, was hardly peeved. Shots were painless. She hardly felt the needle touch her arm.
And while they waited for the rest of the family to join them, Rose loaded up the cart with Puck clothes.
“Aw,” she said. “He’d look so cute in this.”
By the end of the hour, Puck had four new tops for his collection. And Rose had found a few pieces for her wardrobe.
Around the time of lunch, after Mom had prepared mashed potatoes, Francis accompanied her to the United Church of Christ down the road for the traditional sausage supper. And roast beef. So there was the usual feast around the dinner table, before a third of the family split up for naps.
By the time Carrie had returned from class to watch the chubby little man, everyone else piled into the mini van (minus OLeif, who was already downtown to practice), for the Reformation Service at Memorial Presbyterian.
The ride was beautiful, as usual. St. Louis was the best city Collette had ever seen. All the old, uniquely crafted houses, little castles flanked by Washington University and Forest Park. And there sat Memorial Pres. on Skinker Road. And with the autumn leaves and cold winds, it was perfectly set.
The magnum of collective sound – congregation, choir, orchestra, etc., was overpoweringly full. It was a beautiful service, including the Edwards-like sermon delivered by the young Scottish minister, and the organ played by a missionary to Japan. And in the orchestra, half of the Englishs and OLeif accompanied.
After dilly bars, OLeif and Collette took the chubby back home for the night, who had a fun evening with his Tante Carrie, making banana muffins.
It was a good day.
