Rose Gets a Job
Monday was still cold and gray, a good sort of day for Collette, but not as good for Joe, who rarely needed to work on drizzly days.
Mom, Frances, and Linnea were already gone by seven that morning. They had joined Grandma Combs in Cape Girardeau to bag seeds which would be sent to Haiti. On the way home, they would stop at Lambert’s, the home of the throwed rolls.
Meanwhile, after Joe returned from class, he taught Puck how to jump high enough to almost hit his head on the kitchen ceiling. Puck thought this was very funny, and was inspired to jump himself.
Good news came later that afternoon when Carrie called from Chesterfield Mall. Rose was being spontaneously interviewed by the general manager of Olga’s Kitchen.
“It’s a high-end sandwich and smoothie place,” Rose explained later.
She had been hired on the spot. Finally she would be able to save her money for MIZZOU.
Carrie was still busy with advanced algebra, waiting for her trigonometry tapes, and preparing to delve into the wonderful world of calculus.
And the Puck was in the living room trying to chew the stems off the synthetic pears and pomegranates in Mom’s autumn coffee table display.
