Roses, Hail, and Hebrew

Friday, May 20, 2005

Thursday, OLeif had surprised Collette by coming home early. A knock at the door revealed an OLeif loaded down with bags, a case of bottled sodas, and keys in his mouth. In one hand, he held two large bunches of beautiful velvet-red and pale roses. And in one of the bags was a little white cake, iced and quite tasty.

Well aren’t you just the sweetest thing.”

Collette smiled at him as she smelled the dark blossoms.

I know,” OLeif tucked his chin in and grinned heroically.

Collette thought it hailed during the night. Perhaps it was OLeif’s snores which woke her, but she later recalled sitting up in bed and hearing a cracking on the roof. In her state of sleep, however, she nearly forgot about it. It was only at the office the following morning when she heard it had rained an inch in ten minutes, that she recalled the sound in the night. A good deal of branches and trees had been torn off and uprooted around St. Louis as well.

And Friday had been rather dull, nothing interesting to report. However, she learned that Judah not only spoke Swahili, but was versed in Greek and somewhat in Spanish, and was going to take Hebrew over the summer at seminary. He had also studied French in high school; he didn’t remember a jot of it.

Besides that, she decided on lunch break to try eating a cup of blueberries every day for a few weeks. They were apparently full of anti-oxidants which could promote long life. Yeah, right, she thought to herself.

It was time to leave by then anyway. Fridays rarely lasted long anymore. Collette could recall a time when Fridays were always the best day of the week. Every Friday, for years, was the English-Snicketts get-together day. That was where the Everything Co. Fun was born and bred, “Mr. and Mrs. Funny” was premiered, and the “Winker Olympics” were established. It was a day for adventure, invention, and genius. There was always something terribly interesting to do or make. And rarely had there ever been a Friday when anyone could find nothing to do.
