Back to Vacation Bible School for a second go-around. 8:45 arrival. And Puck seemed to manage things well enough for the story, snacks (less sugar-filled this time around), bubbles, singing, and then the closing assembly wherein a giant Chick Fil-A mascot cow came up front to high-five the kids, after which the girls received plush cows, and the boys, rubber balls. The adults received coupons for free Chick Fil-A sandwiches.

Earlier, when Puck had been unsure about joining the other kids for play-time, a beautiful little girl, tinier than Puck, although older, with black hair and nutmeg skin (likely South American, Collette thought), came over to him.

These are all your friends here,” she said. “They all love you and can be your best friends.”

Prior, even, to that, little Anneliese had sat next to Puck during the opening assembly. She put her arms around Puck and giggled with him about ‘baby’ things.

During the closing assembly, Puck sat next to the youngest Romans boy who had a dum-dum in his pocket. Puck encouraged him, showing him how to open it. Then Puck got a big grin on his face and said, ‘There! You did it!’

Following, Francis left with Henri and the boys to Steak ‘n Shake and disc golf.

Then back where Carrie was ready to watch the next game in the World Cup. And for key lime pie, two of them, which Carrie had made the previous evening for Dad.

By the mid-afternoon, the air was so oppressive, it was difficult to breathe when stepping out of doors. The heat indices were predicted to be about 105. And so Linnea was driven down to the Plum’s house to go swimming with the kids.

After the four o’clock hour, Mom returned from Mannino’s with burgers, corn on the cob, and fresh fruits and vegetables for dinner. As usual, Mom polished off her corn on the cob as if there was no food left on earth but that.

Wow, Mom!” Carrie exclaimed. “Looks like you gave it a cut and blow dry.”

…after which, Carrie-Bri and Rose drove Collette and Puck home. Puck was tucked in for the night in his little cocoon, which took a number of attempts. And while neighbor kids shot off early firecrackers in the streets and the fireflies glowed, the girls sat on the red couch and watched Classic Doctor Who on Collette’s laptop.
