Puck was also busy ‘buttering’ the couch with the old butter knife and telling himself Puck-stories.
“Butter, butter, butter! Butter, butter, butter! Once there was a knife, and it was buttering and buttering, until it made a beautiful rainbow, and then a car ran over it. And there was nothing to do. Butter, butter, butter!”
Then shortly after ten o’clock, Collette discovered a purchase on the credit card for something that they had not purchased, a dispute that could not be resolved until Monday.
Meanwhile, it was Great Uncle Fred’s 84th birthday in Independence. At least Collette thought that it was his 84th. And, in celebration, the family had sent him a comfy blanket. For there was nothing much in the way of chocolates or flowers that seemed suitable. But a warm blanket seemed just the thing for the coming winter months. The day was beauty, in most respects. Although Collette could never have been considered a love of the sun, it served its purposes well. And it was a day appropriate for golden autumnal sunshine.
As a side note: the acorns that season were giving off the most fantastic crunch.
In the afternoon, Puck was in a dancing mood and giggled happily as Collette taught him to twirl around, holding onto her finger. She then tried to convince him that maybe he should dance with his second cousin, Liselotte, at Esther’s wedding in November. But Puck was not so certain of this idea…
Then it was time to use Puck’s gift certificate from the dentist for, of all places, Paul’s Donuts and Ice Cream, a place they had not stepped within for a number of years. Ice cream, sugar, in general, was not a thing often incorporated into Puck’s diet.
When they first opened the door, they were met with the bakery aromas of fresh donuts, including Collette’s favorites: chocolate long johns. And when Puck was lifted up by his daddy to see the endless barrels of colored creamy stuffs… he could not begin to officially understand which might be the best choice to make. However, he seemed quite set on the ‘red one’, which, as it turned out, was the same one that Collette had wanted: pomegranate gelato. Excellent choice.
They sat at a little table together, the only customers in the quiet shop, and finished off four scoops’ worth.
After this, to the Silverspoon’s where Collette pulled up live streaming of the Barcelona game, Collette’s second-favorite team, by default. And where, also, Bluebell South, Mr. South, and his mother had gathered to watch the Texas football game at the same time. It was, perhaps, a fortunate thing for them that Collette’s AC STL vs. Austin live streaming would not begin until 8:30 that night…
The Souths had only just come from the wedding of a former choir member, where Izzy had also been shooting second camera.
Barcelona… it was a rainy night. Looked to be pouring at times. And despite the lack of the injured Messi, still had in its repertoire: David Villa, Puyol, and a smattering of other good shots, including Piqué, who reminded Collette very much of Esther’s fiance.
And in the fifty-fourth minute, Barcelona made their goal. And again in the seventy-fourth. In the ninetieth minute, Athletic Bilbao responded with their own. But in the end, a win for Barcelona with yet another goal in the ninety-third.
After the game, OLeif, who had finished mowing the back lawn for Gloria, had also started up the grill with cables of beef and vegetables and burgers.
The skies had also become gray in the last hours, no doubt in preparation for Sunday’s rain and the predicted high of only sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit.
As they gathered together for dinner, including Bluebell’s game day cheese dip, Bluebell saw Puck playing Cowboy with his space gun from the toy closet.
“Oh, I remember how we were going to try to teach Relevance not to play with guns when he was growing up,” she said. “And so he started using sticks instead. And I remember one day when we went out to Leakey, and he must have been about Puck’s age. And he saw all of these sticks all over the ground and he started running around gathering up as many as he could saying, ‘Look, Mama! Look at all the guns!’”
As they drove home that evening, the rain softly fell, and the golden glow of the lamps lit the open windows into the quiet, cool dark of the night.
Followed by another AC STL vs. Austin game via live streaming. Equalizer for Saint Louis in the 40th minute. But then it went downhill, though Saint Louis had provided the scare. For a brand new team that everyone thought would be dead last… they had nearly made the play-offs. Not bad for the boys in green and yellow.
And through the night, the rain continued to fall beyond the open windows…

The morning began with cool airs, burning bacon in the frying pan (this time it was OLeif’s fault), and a chubby Puckling who had slept nearly fourteen hours, if not more, and had then bundled himself up in the dark blue crocheted blanket on the couch to read
The Gentleman Bug (an OLeif-find, naturally, at the library), and, as could be guessed, more Calvin.Puck was also busy ‘buttering’ the couch with the old butter knife and telling himself Puck-stories.
