Snow Day

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

That morning, Collette and Puck, who had more or less been snowed in for the day, spent that bright and sunny morning inside the house. Puck had plenty of occupations for the next several hours.
First, he watched his Daduu shovel the driveway and sweep the seven-inch stacks of snow off the roof of the car.
This inspired him to do his own sweeping. He pulled the dust pan and brush, out from the kitchen, and began to brush imaginary snow off the chairs in the living room.
Afterward, he found OLeif’s old business card collection and sorted it on the kitchen floor.
He followed this with a run around the house, pretending to be an airplane, after he had dismantled his gorilla jigsaw puzzle.
After these shenanigans, he found a giant plastic candy cane in the coat closet leftover from a previous Christmas, and took it on a walk, thinking that he was a very important sort of little person because of it.
That’s how Puck’s morning went.
Around noon, OLeif returned to finish shoveling the driveway, and the neighbor’s. It was one of the few times of the year that almost every house-front was covered in visible activity. Everyone, it would seem, had a shovel and a snowsuit.
For the afternoon, Puck climbed chairs and turned over couch cushions, making himself funny little forts and establishments, all the while reminding himself rather loudly:
“Be careful. Be careful.”
And it was another quiet evening at home with more of the old silver screen and ice cream with OLeif.
