So soon may I follow...

Collette heard briefly from Mom Friday morning about her trip up to Iowa – Italian dinner in Galena, shopping in Cologna where in the Amish shops on stormy days (seeing as electricity was outlawed), they would bring up oil lamps to keep the store lit. A spaghetti dinner cooked up by Mrs. Lord-Welches. Hanging curtains at Mrs. Lord-Welches’ mother’s home. And more sad news from the family. But they had thoroughly enjoyed their time.
Later in the afternoon, Joe dropped by the office briefly to show Collette and Rose Lolli’s green convertible, which he was detailing for the afternoon.
Rose was already there to fold bulletins, as seemed to be becoming the habit. Collette helped her. The subject of the conversation that afternoon was choir. Rose was expressing her thoughts on the sopranos and altos.
“I just don’t understand how they can laugh at everything,” she said. “And they’re always like ‘Whaaaaaaaaa!’ all the time.”
Rose sighed.
Later, they brought the bulletins to the church and Rose examined a leather bound Bible sitting on the youth table. She squinted at some drawings on the front cover, apparently.
“Who knows Chinese and draws ‘shrooms?” She asked, and set it back on the table.
Walking back to the office, she found a jagged rock on the path.
“Look, I’m going to tell Linnea this is a shark’s tooth,” she snickered and picked it up.
Back at the office they shared a leftover bag of chips from Chevy’s until Dad came to pick her up shortly later.
After dinner, the rest of the evening was spent under a cold full moon and little orange pumpkin lights at the Chocolate Cafe, where the boys played.
A group gathered, including Mr. Sing, Mrs. South, Lolli, and Grandma South, Scott Hamilton Pie and his two oldest girls (who were sharing a mammoth brownie at their table), Mr. and Mrs. Milk, Roo McCrae and Molly, Emerald Buckle, Joe and Rose, Augustus, and even Eve (who had just finished her shift at Culpepper’s).
The fireplace was flickering by the ring of couches and OLeif ordered his iced chai. Collette read her Mollie book while the kids chatted.
And Collette spoke with Eve about various things, including her school and work. She was entertaining the idea of heading to Bolivia during her two week summer break for a medical mission trip. And her weeks were full with classes, working four nights a week, Bible study on Monday nights, and leading AWANA on Thursdays. It was always interesting to hear how old friends were fairing.
The evening ended well with Collette discovering her thought-to-be-lost leather gloves in her old coat, which Carrie and Lucia had picked out for her years before.
