Some Like it Hot... Not

In which festivities continue following graduation…

Puck was at it again with the interesting statements…
“Why do you want a Hot Wheeled egg?”
“My nose is thinking it needs a Kleenex.”
“I will put my lie away!”
He still called receipts, ads, filler papers, etc., ’emergencies’.
And the whole kitchen was soon bouncing with Puck’s entire collection of bouncy balls.

It was mercilessly hot.
By nine o’clock it was already 80.8 degreed Fahrenheit.
Not a good sign.
89.4 by noon.
91.8 at 1:00.
92.9 by 2:00.
93.4 by 3:00.
Heat index at 104.
The morning and early afternoon really didn’t have anything more special than that.

In the mail, a book came for Puck, from Ligonier, The Priest with Dirty Clothes.
“Mr. Sproul sent you that,” Collette told him.
Puck excitedly began looking through the pages.
“That was so nice of Mr. Bolb to send that to me! That was so nice of Mr. Bolb!”

Despite the unkind weather, it was time to attend Quail Ridge for Izzy’s, Charlie’s, and German’s graduation party, with two other graduates tacked on. Three-forty saw them pulling out of the driveway with a boxed game set for the boys, a creation of OLeif’s mind entitled Pigs & Monkeys which was to be played on the Lindenwood campus beginning in the fall. And a bowl packed with strawberries.
OLeif was bordering on heat exhaustion when he arrived on his bike.
Joe was already there on the Ruckus.
Francis came not long later in the Fit, following the crowd out for a round of Ultimate Frisbee in the shadeless field with German singing loudly something about being ‘white and nerdy’.
“What?” he yelled at Francis, who was laughing at him.
And pretty much everyone was dripping, especially around the grilling burgers, hot dogs, and beans. Not to mention the piles of fruits (including watermelon), vegetables, chips, and cookies and two homemade cakes frosted with game controls.
“Aaah!” Charlie kept saying. “It’s soooo hot!”
And Joe would tempt him with the current 76 degrees, 0% humidity of New Mexico.
German’s mammoth sound system competed with the cicadas via Tally Hall and Nickelback.
And Puck was given big hugs by his uncles and adopted uncles, chiefly Charlie and German.
It was always interesting to watch the upcoming generations. So different from the one Collette had experienced. She hadn’t recalled any of the graduates of 2003 having parties to celebrate ‘the end’. And if they had, somehow she didn’t think there would even be a quarter of the guests present that were housed at the current party around them.
Also, it was discovered that the family from the old Kirk days, who had intended at one time on becoming missionaries to Ireland, were cousins and second cousins to German’s family. Always a small world.

Back to the house to cool off, cherry-faced Puck plunked in the tub and down for the night. Rose over not long later to join in for movie night. And Magnus. Whole Grain Cheez-Its, Pringles, Luigi’s Italian Ices (Rose’s pick), and Joe’s movie selection featuring the horrific Nicholas Cage. Some pretty good laughs over that ridiculous fiasco of filmage which elicited random responses from the kids…
Joe and Magnus air drumming and wailing away with the music.
“What? He’s afraid of heights?” Rose said aloud during a particular scene. “He lives in New York!”
“What, you can’t be afraid of heights and live in New York?” OLeif asked.
“No, because that’s all they have there is heights.”
And Magnus told them about how he had been hit by a cicada in the ear earlier on the library parking lot.

In other news…
Linnea was starting up volleyball.
And there was a wedding invitation for the Snicketts family for Janek Raven, July 10th, in Louisville.
