Sorry for the Little Guy

Collette had spent the entirety of Wednesday writing her new book over a cranberry juice; she finished the twenty-second page just as OLeif walked in from work at six o’clock. Although it was certainly no masterpiece, she enjoyed writing for no particular reason, and when she was finished, Diana always volunteered to read whatever latest installment came through, and to edit at will.

At work, it was only Ivy and Collette the entire day, as Judah and Sinai were in Tennessee for General Assembly, and Collette only answered the phone once. The day was very quiet, though busy. One of the more interesting things of the day was discovering that Mr. and Mrs. Scone from church, an elderly couple who owned an old bed and breakfast from the late 1700’s in Defiance, had a Columbian daughter-in-law who was going down to visit her family for two months that summer.

Meanwhile, Ivy was preparing to leave on vacation and to visit her sister in Florida the following week (provided no new hurricanes popped up); she examined tourist guidebooks and booked a hotel over lunch break. She listed Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Sea World, and Universal Studios among her options for sight-seeing. She also related another critter tale as she walked down to the “snake pit” to refill her water jug.

The other day I came in, and I see this mouse, this dead mouse in the corner by the door. I felt so sorry for the little guy – he was still soft and gray. He had just died, and he was in there since Saturday because Megan told me later that Travis saw him run in while the men were working. It was so sad.”

But there were other things to discuss, and Ivy reviewed the latest instructions for feeding the cats, as OLeif and Collette would again be watching the house for the 23rd of June through the 3rd of July. And she offered the use of her new gas grill for steaks and the ice tea maker and rice cooker. They could have friends over as well, she said, which meant that Carrie-Bri would likely be over several times to play with the kitties and to watch some films. Diana and Eve would most likely come by as well for dinner and a good talk one of the evenings.
