OLeif was leaving for North Carolina that afternoon, not to return until Thursday night. Before he left, he mowed the lawn in his new bald head with iPod headphones, packed his bag, and was strongly urged to write two thank you notes to his aunt and old friends in Illinois for gifts given to Puck. Although he never quite got around to doing it.

After OLeif had picked up the old green slug from the house, Collette and Puck waited around during the afternoon until Linnea was ready to return with them to spend the night.

During the day hours, Dad and Mom went garage door hunting, Carrie-Bri was at work, and Joe was at some sort of automobile exhibition. Rose was also preparing for work that evening. But first, she picked up a trash-can full of sticks leftover from the two felled trees earlier that week. One of these sticks went to support her latest plant.

“It’s the world’s hottest pepper,” Rose informed Collette, carrying it to the kitchen. “I’m going to make my own hot sauce.”

Later, Dad helped tie her robin’s egg blue tie before leaving for work.

There were also rumors that Lucia was on her first date with a fella from work. He had invited her to the Science Center.

And out back, the bonfire from the trees perched high into the air above a ring of logs. It was so great an unlit fire, that Lucia decided it looked like a human sacrifice in the making.
