“Yali, don’t climb the banister,” I warned him. “That’s dangerous.”

Yali hopped off the railing to the basement, and said carefully to me, “Okay, Mama.” Then, taking on an important tone, he did what he does best : imitation. “You’ll hurt yourself, and you’ll die, and you’ll crack your head open!”
