Sundays, Sundays

Ah, Sundays…
Breakfast the Puck until he’s full enough to pop. Shower. Wash Puck’s armada of bottles used in the past 16 hours. Pack all necessary bags for the day. Make sure that OLeif and Puck are at least decently dressed for church, despite the fact that OLeif’s corduroys are shamefully eroded in the knee area. Leave twelve minutes too late. Forget about breakfast.
Although that particular morning, OLeif, who had been awake battling congestion since 3:45 in the morning, decided on a whim to bake biscuits from scratch before church. Collette reluctantly watched him take off for milk and eggs while she fed Puck. When the OLeif was inspired, there was no stopping him. The biscuits were served hot an hour later with well-peppered eggs. And though they cost an additional nine minutes of lateness, they were good, and Collette was thankful to have breakfast for a change.
It was gray out. Rain. Nice. But very cold. Puck had been sharply dressed in his little outfit from his Aunt Diana, complete with collared shirt and tie. The outfit was meant for a twelve-monther. Seeing as he was five months too early, he fit into it as predicted. The shirt and sweater vest were almost too small. The pants had to be cuffed twice. But they were soon out the door and arrived very late to practice.
After crawling around the carpet during Senior High Sunday School, Puck watched Augustus make faces at him. Augustus waved. Puck stared in concentration, lifted his arm, and bobbed his hand.
“Hey, I taught your son how to wave!” Augustus exclaimed.
It was Puck’s first official mimicked wave.
OLeif’s ears were still under the weather as strikingly presented in his violin-ing that morning, particularly during communion.
Back on the ranch, Joe was sick. Carrie had returned from visiting Lucia’s church, which met at a YMCA. OLeif and Rose met Ben-Hur, Augustus, Susie, and Sunrise at Pizza Street. The Christmas tree had been ornamented. Frances and Linnea had surprised Mom and Dad by piecing it together Friday night while Mom and Dad were on a date.
Mom’s birthday was going to be partially celebrated that night, which included another jaunt to Cracker Barrel. And although Puck was not able to sample most of the edibles, he did enjoy swinging a box of Tic Tacs through the air. He was also awarded with a spoon dipped in Mom’s gravy before the table had been cleared.
Later, back at home, Puck was down to cuddles and dreams. OLeif returned to youth. And Collette enjoyed “Bizzare Foods” on the Travel Channel – sake garnished with whole lizards, beating frog hearts, teriake Madagascar hissing cockroaches, poisonous blowfish with enough toxins remaining in the flesh to numb the mouth… Fascinatingly disgusting.
