Tenebrae

Thursday, April 1, 2010

Maundy Thursday coinciding with April Fool’s… uncommon occurrence, yes.

The moon was still up shining white at their 6:30 departure.

A few minutes till seven, they met Gloria at the Drury Inn where Collette and Puck transferred items to the Audi to spend the day with the Silverspoon’s. Except for Theodore who was in New York until that evening. And there were egg sandwiches waiting.

Then Izzy left for his 8:30 chemistry class at the community college — the same professor Collette had once, already eight and a half years ago.

When Izzy returned from class, he said, “One of the kids fell asleep in the back, so Dr. Bookstaver threw an eraser and hit him.”

That sounded like good old Dr. Bookstaver.

Puck followed breakfast with a good deal of time spent out of doors with Curly, who was home for an Easter visit, bouncing a large rubber ball off the roof, playing hide-and-seek, and running around like an airplane.

Then more Calvin & Hobbes readings, Little Bear, and then Joe dropped off a car for Collette to drive out to the house and look over four of Carrie’s term papers to check for readability.

And then Joe and Curly took off to film a new silly movie.

That night, after burgers with Gloria, (while OLeif met with old work buddies at Applebee’s), Collette and Puck attended the Tenebrae service at church — Latin for ‘darkness’. And, as in her memory seemed to be the tradition now, year after year, communion was served, followed by the departure of the congregants, in silence.
