Thanksgiving

Feast day. Two times over. The day before, Mom had everything prepared in advance, down to changing the kitchen hand towel above the sink to the “Thursday” towel of the week. She had also decided to use Rose’s collection of contemporary early American ceramic bowels — creations of her own making. These would house the cashews, green olives, black olives, and cranberries.
But the first order of the day was attending church with the Silverspoon’s, where Pastor Marshall delivered a homily, inserting a passage from the usual collection of William Bradford writings.
Back at the house, Denae prepared a large lunch of turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, cranberries, green “froo froo” salad, and hot rolls. This was followed with pie.
While Puck napped, OLeif and Curly worked on playing through the hymn that Jacob had written for class.
Several hours later, OLeif, Collette, and Puck joined the family back at the house where Grandma Combs, Uncle Mo, Aunt Petunia, Lucia, and Linus had already arrived.
Puck quickly adjusted to being the center of the party, blowing kisses, patting Troops on the head (as he had done with Sebastian) saying, “Good dog! Good dog!”, etc.
He was more than eager to dive in for a second round of turkey and hot rolls, including roast, potato casserole, cranberry Jell-O, etc. They left before pies were officially served — pecan and pumpkin. But the chubby was fully satisfied, not to mention the round of pretzels toward the end of the evening.
Carrie was back from a week in Texas with a book for Puck — the adventures of a gold coin in lands of pirates and ocean. She was tired from late nights and a long drive back. Little rest would follow. Mom and Dad were leaving for the Welk Resort in Branson for the weekend, which meant that Carrie would be holding down the fort yet again.
So another Thanksgiving. More time with the family. It always resulted in a good day.
