The Days of Man
Wednesday, January 17, 2007
Wednesday was another cold day which began with more flurries and a hazy gray-rose on the horizon. Collette, once again, did not see much fresh air that day; it seemed to escape her rather often, especially when the weather was too cold not to put on a coat, scarf, hat, and gloves before venturing out and about.
Meanwhile, Rose had Spanish at the Community College early in the morning.
Unfortunately, she had forgotten to pay for the class prior to arrival. So Mom spent an hour or so of her day remedying the incident with student administration, getting professor approval to admit her to the class (seeing as Rose’s name had since been dropped from the roll and the class had become full), signing purple permission papers, and finally actually paying for the class.
“Never again,” Mom said. “We can’t ever forget to pay again.”
In the afternoon, Carrie spent about an hour on the phone with Grandma Snicketts, whom she had initially called to thank for the extra spending money she had given her and Rose when they went to Egypt. Carrie was able to catch up on the latest news – nothing very new – but there was word that Polly was considering the first week of August for the wedding.
The conversation took place after Carrie had met with Paige Popp at Starbucks for forty-five minutes over coffee. Apparently, Paige Popp had new wedding plans afoot, but nothing concrete it seemed.
Later in the day, Carrie, who was globe-hopping happy, found good rates for a week in London over spring break. After research, she then arranged plans to meet with Lucia that evening to redye her hair.
After Linnea’s choir, Linnea returned home with Mom and Joe.
“Collette!” she called, upon walking in the door, “Here, I got this for you.”
She handed Collette a small package of Pringles.
“I had to hurry and get it from the vending machine before Mom came to get me,” she said, “so I didn’t get anything else this time.”
Linnea loved counting her nickels and dimes for the vending machine from week to week. It was her special treat and she often found little snacks for everyone else.
And Carrie took yet another nap or two during the day – and she wondered why she was still having such trouble recovering from jet lag…
After dinner, Carrie wound various practice turbans (with cloth from Egypt) around Joe’s head in preparation to make him an Arabian lord for the madrigal dinner. He would recycle his floating gold cape from two years before.
Rose was to take over Carrie’s role as gypsy and wear Carrie’s old gold skirt with coins around the hem that clinked at every move.
The evening brought OLeif to the house to pick up Frances and Linnea for church activities where OLeif would also help with the junior high. And Joe had a meeting at work after Rose and Joe had a session of essay-writing with Mom.
Joe also kept trying to pawn off his Gap gift card from Christmas, to whomever might be interested in an exchange for cash. No one was interested, as of yet.
