The Engagement
Sunday, January 18, 2009
The big news of the week came from Eve. Saturday night, she had become officially engaged to Othniel Avonlea. And she had a sparkling diamond ring on her finger.
Carrie-Bri joined the English family that same evening to congratulate Eve and Othniel, and to see the ring. Collette remembered a similar sort of gathering five years earlier, when it was the English girls who had come over to the Snicketts house to see Collette and her engagement ring.
Apparently Eve had already warned Carrie, who was going to be a bridesmaid, that she couldn’t look at her during the wedding ceremony.
“You get laughing attacks,” Eve had said. “So you can’t look at me.”
It was true. Carrie was the queen of poorly timed laughing attacks, for no apparent reason. Carrie promised to do her best to behave herself.
So Eve would begin to make her plans for the big day, now only four months away.
It had been a long, full Sunday. They had run all over town for various rehearsals, services, and classes. So by the time nine o’clock rolled around, Collette was happy to wrap up the evening with Carrie and Lucia over a movie and drumsticks.
