The Faulty Batch

Friday, May 7, 2010

The day pulled in a trove of wind and steel skies. Though no rain. Collette was at the office once again.

But first, to drop off OLeif for a carpool with Rose, eggs-in-a-nest and bacon for breakfast with the gang, including Dad, and then to bring over the happy Puck to stay with his Nana for the day, and overnight. He was excited to see several rows of bright pink flowers, some yellow, and a hearty rose sitting on the front porch to help plant that afternoon.

Sinai was already at the office, having been up since three in the morning. Judah soon arrived himself, as did Idlewild’s mother, the newly-hired Children’s Ministry Director. For the Popples family would be leaving at the end of the month for Kentucky. And Rosemary would be stepping down from her post of five years.

In the afternoon, sunlight sliced through the cover from time to time, spilling silver onto the outer hedge of ruffling trees across the old daisy field, which had not yet caught bloom.

Meanwhile, two bulletins: one for the Sunday morning service, and the other for Henrii’s ordination service on Sunday evening. The copier was ornery in the morning, delaying the printing till noon. And as a result, Collette could not leave the office until 6:30… which was when the colossal error was discovered. So, because no ordination bulletin should have any name but the actual ordinand’s name printed within its pages, Collette drove down to Clayton to pick up OLeif, ordered take-out from the Fatted Calf: bacon cheeseburgers and two giant chocolate chip cookies, and then a bottle of Simply Apple apple juice for Collette, and back to the office for two hours of reprinting the unfortunate bulletin while OLeif extracted staples from the faulty batch and watched the most recent episode of LOST.

An alternative date night, but not a bad one.
