The Old Silliness

Friday, October 5, 2007

Friday morning, OLeif burnt his coffee. He spilled Puck’s peaches all over his shirt. Then he spilled the coffee over the edge of his cup onto the wood floor. It was not his morning. He then began to sing for Puck, who was eating his pillow:

I’ve caught me a pillow,

I’m going to eat it all day long.”

After a day of math with Frances and trying to get him to mow the lawn while Mom and Linnea were at the English’s, Collette joined OLeif at Mercy’s and Cal’s wedding rehearsal and dinner while Mom watched the bubbling and rather cranky Puck.

After beginning the rehearsal nearly an hour late, most of the party had arrived. This was followed with dinner at a Greek restaurant down the highway. Upon arrival, four couples gathered at one of the tables: Shepherd and Malaya, OLeif and Collette, Peter and Julia, and Relevance. They were soon to discover that Kitts, who had been driving separately in Bluebell’s Miata, had run out of gas. So while she figured out what to do, everyone sat around the table and waited for dinner to be served.

As usual, Collette enjoyed watching the action around the table and trying not to laugh.

Relevance was busy watching the very full water glasses being rocked back and forth between Shepherd and Peter knocking their elbows on the table.

It’s pretty amazing that none of these have spilled yet,” he said.

Yeah, Norman would be the one to notice that,” said OLeif. “Calculating which one would spill first.”

Yeah, like, what’s the surface tension on that stuff?” Relevance laughed.

Meanwhile, Kitts had still not arrived.

I want my iPod back,” Peter was saying to Shepherd.

Well too bad – I ate it!” Shepherd shouted across the table.

Laugh it up,” said Relevance.

Laugh what up?” asked Peter.

Nothing.”

(In all fairness, everyone was talking very loudly. It was a noisy room.”

Soon, the waiter entered the room and got their attention. After listing two fancy beef or fish dishes, the third alternative was Pasta al Greco.

Did he say al Gecko?” Relevance asked.

And by this time, Kitts had returned after walking to the QT, purchasing a fuel can, filling it up, dispensing it into the Miata, and arriving, finally, to the restaurant, which still had yet to serve the food.

After she had narrated her adventure, she looked at the water glasses.

It’s amazing that none of these have spilled yet.”

After a dozen or so drinks had been served and the salad passed out, the conversation continued to circle around alcoholic beverages, cartoons, Kitts convincing everyone to visit Austin, and foods (most of which Collette had never tried (i.e. calamari) and never cared to try).

The evening ended at ten.
