The Old Times

In which an old friend is met for lunch…
Broken glass.
Spilled red apple candle wax.
Collette was getting clumsy in her older age…
Meanwhile, back on the ranch…
Dad was assisting a neighbor with computer problems.
Andy flipped on some Irish fiddling.
Linnea-Irish and Puck were sorting through a box of coins dating back to the 1890’s in order to begin assessing their value.
And while Linnea practiced volleyball drills indoors, Carrie relayed her last phone conversation with Lucia…
“There’s a big dragonfly staring at me.”
“Where are you?”
“At work. I’ve had a productive morning. You’d be so proud of me, sugarplum. I’ve just planned out the next ten years of my life.”
“Oh, I guess it has been a busy morning…”
“No. Just ten minutes.”
And…
It had not been since December of ’09 that Collette and Ivy had met together for lunch. So it was off on the road with Ben-Hur on CD to an 11:30 meet-up at Chipotle…
Burrito bowl filled with cilantro-lime rice, black beans, steak, sour cream, and cheese. Two cups of water.
It was always like revisiting the good old days on meet-ups with Ivy. Times that were sometimes temptingly viewed as ‘better’, in many ways. They discussed health, church troubles, family situations, and the usual topics of conversation, while all the twenty-something local businessmen filed into line in their lavender and baby pink collared shirts… until the clock read nearly three in the afternoon.
Three and a half hours later — it took awhile to catch up on nineteen months of absence — back to the house…
Puck had immediate news.
“Guess what! I belong to Sun now, and you can borrow me if you pay her one hundred dollars. Do you have your English coins?”
She had not.
Linnea had left for an eight-hour-plus Harry Potter party, contributing special Carrie-made brownies to the gathering.
Mom had been fabric shopping.
The discussion of possibly temporarily changing up Collette’s hair to a dark red…
And Collette briefly looked over Joe’s resume with him.
Home for the usual:
Dinner.
Alphabet, numbers, and words.
Catechism.
Library books.
Bible.
Prayers.
Bible on CD while Puck fell asleep…
“Did you believe your fears, instead of me?”
