The Thunder & The Lightnings
First news of the morning: our cousin, Blessing, was engaged with a sapphire ring over her birthday weekend. There were rumors of Australia somehow involved for her future. So potentially two family weddings in one year. Irish wasn’t a fan of this idea:
“When I get married, I’m going to make sure no one else in the family is getting married the same year, because then I’ll have to go to two weddings in one year.”
Lightning and thunder cracked in the night, continued into the morning, afternoon, all day. Explosions, those tearing cracks we love to hear any time of year.
Puck had a gift for Carrie-Bri when we arrived. He had stuffed it in an oatmeal box and proudly handed it to her after Mom assisted him with Easter grass packing material and a shiny green bow on top:
“Oh, Puck! It’s a bunny holding a baseball! I love it!”
Puck was very pleased with this gift he had picked out himself, “His name is David Freese 2.”
Later I believe they decided to nickname him “Mini Fridge.”
Francis crashed through the front door hunting food late that morning, begged me to make him a fried egg sandwich. He added a tall glass of milk topped with Reddi-Wip to embellish this unconventional brunch. Discussed swim classes, then pottery class. Who knew that he would love it? He also helped Puck open the geode gifted him via “magic sneeze” from Carrie, who recharges her magic during thunderstorms. Puck, however, is beginning to have his doubts:
“Sun, it’s not really magic, is it? You just already had the geode out here. Or you had someone buy it for you.”
“Well, I don’t know about that. It was just a magic sneeze.”
“Yeah, but … sometimes I’m just tempted to think that magic is not real. Just tempted to think that you didn’t really sneeze it out.”
“Well, sometimes it’s just fun to believe in things. Just for fun.”
“Right, yeah… You just put the geode there, didn’t you?”
Carrie told him he was too smart for his own good, and left it at that. The geode, earlier, had been exploded into well more than two pieces when Francis decided to take a sledgehammer to it in the garage. But Puck was still more than pleased with the results:
“Is this geode very precious, Mom?”
It was already after four. Mom made omelettes and salad for dinner. And we were back out the door.
El Oso and I shared Ben & Jerry’s: Peanut Butter & Fudge Core that night while I kept up with the ballgame on At Bat. It’s the little things.
