Tuesday morning Rose had been lighting candles in her room near Pumpkin’s rump (where she sat demurely on Rose’s desk watching the birds out the window) and subsequently almost lit the cat on fire.

“It was smoking,” Rose said matter-of-factly, “and she didn’t feel it yet because it had to go through all the layers of fat.”


Collette noted that Pumpkin seemed to be absent from Rose’s room for most of Wednesday and made her appearance instead at the dinner table, waiting to be fed from Frances’ plate, while she curiously sniffed the bowl of carrots.
