They Would Make Great Tops

There was still a little time for Puck to kill before we left for school that morning. And I knew he had his salvaging eye on all the shiny round gold doorknobs on the built-in living room cabinetry.

“Mom, you’re going to be taking these cabinets out, right?”

“I don’t know what Dad wants to do with those yet, son.”

“Well, can I have all the doorknobs?”

“No, son. You may not have the door knobs.”

“But, Mom! They would make great tops! Let me show you!”

He wasn’t wrong.

After dinner and a pink sunset, I washed the dishes, Puck cracked open the homework, and Yali began storing his trucks in the refrigerator. Until he found the Trader Joe’s bag of Oxbear’s hard-boiled eggs, and went to town on those things.

It was time for Yali to go to sleep. Puck came in to say goodnight.

“Hug, Puck!” Yali called for his big brother.

Puck obliged. “Come here, you little cocoa bean.”
