Things Here, Things There

It was another six-degree morning – more frost on the windows.

It was off to Cracker Barrel at 12:30 for Rosemary’s birthday lunch – she was a breakfast sort of person and already had plans on ordering the French toast. Collette had similar plans. And Judah managed to polish off an entire Uncle Herschel’s breakfast, which included two heaping plates of grits, biscuits and gravy, eggs, sausages, and chicken tenders. Rosemary was also awarded a small blackberry cobbler to share with everyone, in honor of her big day.

“No singing,” she insisted to the waitress.

“Don’t worry, I don’t sing,” came the reply. “But I will bring you that cobbler.”

Rosemary had already been given the gift of a very poorly tuned Happy Birthday, Sunday morning on her actual birthday from the children’s choir (which met before Sunday School). Somehow they had never managed to find their starting note given to them by Isabella.

And there was another temptation that morning – pink iced sugar cookies sitting in a box on the island in the copy room – remnants of the junior high Valentine’s Day party. Collette sometimes wondered if sugar had become her mortal enemy. She was starting to blame it on baby, considering the fact that he might have a severe case of the sweet tooth.

Meanwhile, Mom had volunteered herself and Linnea to fold the bulletin that night while watching Benji. The rest of the troops would be skiing down slippery white slopes (without the chili dinner, as had been decided). So the chili was being saved for Frances’ birthday dinner on Sunday evening.

And, yes, it was a potential round four of strep throat in the Snicketts family, but only for Carrie-Bri, who felt her third time coming round. Although there was still the hopeful possibility that it was merely a sore throat and not severe this time.

OLeif was dropped off by Shepherd a little early from work that evening, and crunched up the driveway to the front door.

“Shepherd wanted to get a drink,” he said, holding up his Styrofoam cup of soda.

That soda, combined with another large Dr. Pepper with dinner caused him to stay awake until 3:30 that morning. But he and Shepherd enjoyed taking their soda breaks from time to time. Collette couldn’t help but morbidly think of kidney stones.

The rest of OLeif’s and Collette’s evening was spent driving over to The Valley to pick up a wooden shade from World Market, dinner, and two discs of the second season of The Office. And then it was home to snuggle in and wait for another round of good hearty February snow during the night (likely a little lighter).

Collette wondered how the skiers were faring on the hills.

And Polly and Fernando had finally settled on a seven o’clock wedding (no longer at the plantation) but at the New Town church and on the canal grounds and amphitheater for the reception.

It seemed to have been a very recreational sort of day.
