Things & Stuff

In which OLeif’s first pre-birthday is spent in various places doing various things…

Off to the Silverspoon’s after a drop-by the library for Mulan, which Puck had never seen. As they made their exit, a lump of common fur paddled across the pavement into the bushes. One of the librarians hurried out behind them.
“What was that?” she asked.
A mole. And for being a sluggish sort of creature, he tunneled into the mulch as quickly as any other beast intent on escaping his presumed predators.

Over to the Silverspoon’s, Collette watched Puck practice ‘angry faces’ in the mirror, which mostly entailed pouting lips and rolled eyes.
Once there, OLeif had already arrived on his bike. And Puck made preparations to begin his planned activities of the morning, namely, riding the much-too-small red tricycle in circles around the kitchen table. But first, he wanted to know…
“Where’s Nana?”
“She’s at a shower,” Theodore explained.
Puck ran back to his nana’s and papa’s room.
“She’s not in the shower!”
Then Theodore washed off some strawberries for him.
A small tub of ceramic pie weights sat in the kitchen.
Puck begged some cold cherry pomegranate juice.
Watermelon on the counter.
Roast sandwiches.
Warm silver skies.
After one o’clock, Izzy returned from one of the Philmont prep hikes, which Francis had also attended. (Francis, who was busy looking into mechanical aircraft jobs, and had returned from the Spirit of St. Louis Airport in black slacks and a collared shirt only the previous afternoon.)
Dad had apparently been at the church work day and two more softball games.
After Izzy had returned, some experimental motorcycle driving for the three guys…
“Can I get one, Mom?” Izzy asked.
The J. J. Abrams movie for a 4:30 showing for the boys while Gloria washed the dog.
And Gloria had ordered a shoe polishing kit for OLeif’s birthday.
A run to Walgreen’s for Gloria and Puck. They returned with a shiny blue and green soccer ball. The green patches glowed in the dark.
There was also a special hair brush for OLeif.
Sweet potato wedges cooked in butter and grass-fed burgers for dinner.

On the way home, Collette counseled Puck on his Sunday School class the following morning.
“Last time my heart wasn’t happy with that love,” he said seriously.

Other thoughts of previous days…
The other afternoon while discussing the properties of evolution with Linnea, Dad had been facetiously speaking about the various levels of intelligence in human beings…
“And some of them don’t have the sense of a ping-pong ball…”
“Hello?” Rose said from the other room, completely unintended.
That was a good laugh.
And Izzy had been given a large foam Thor hammer from a friend for graduation.

OLeif returned later.
Ice cream.
It had been a long time.
