Unfortunate Incidents

Thursday, August 24, 2006

A bright fateful day in Thursday morning was the August day that declared for the first time since its discovery in 1930, that Pluto was no longer a planet. It was a sad day for astronomers everywhere. Carrie was also very upset, seeing that it had been her mostly favorite planet over the years. It seemed to have always been a toss-up between Pluto and Saturn. Rose would also have to remove her colored Pluto card from her natural sciences notes.

In other news, back on Tuesday afternoon, Collette had just been leaving work for the day with Ivy, who was to drop her off at the apartment. OLeif called the office for Collette, right as they were about to drive away. Judah answered the phone and OLeif asked to speak with Collette. In Judah’s haste to catch Collette before she left, he hurried to the stairs, tripped on the top step, and fell half-way down. Collette did not realize it until Thursday morning when Judah entered the office with his entire left arm in a sling.

He had broken a bone in his hand. He looked part mummy. But he seemed chipper.

The only thing I can’t do is tie my shoes,” he was telling Ivy. “Amy Kristina has to do that for me.”

Evangeline’s sister, Amy Kristina, visiting from her work in Central America, was still staying with them.

We should get her a sign to wear for all her efforts,” Ivy teased. “’I have to tie my brother-in-law’s shoes for him.’”

She earns her keep that way,” Judah joked.

And somewhere in the middle of the day, Jimmy was called away from setting up new chairs in the church, to take care of a water pipe that had burst back at his house.

Later, Ivy and Rosemary mothered Judah a bit after noticing that his hand looked swollen.

Take that thing off,” Rosemary commanded, indicating the sling.

Judah did so obediently and spent the rest of the afternoon elevating his arm above his head to induce circulation, and ate various things from the fridge.

Hummus anyone?” He asked later, digging in.

Oh, I thought you said pumice!” Ivy chuckled to herself. “Did Evangeline grow up in California? Because they eat really healthy out there. That would explain all these new foods you’re bringing in now.”

It had been a long day. Collette was also pleased to see the day come to a close and was picked up later by OLeif. She gave him some wrapped peanut butter cookies left over from the church movie night. And when they got back, OLeif made himself an entire pot of tea.
