Virginia's Birthday

Monday, March 21, 2005

It was the morning of Virginia’s birthday down in old Louisiana. And it was as well, a day for a bit of a road trip. Grandma had spent the night over at the house the evening before and they were to take a trip to Mansfield to visit Laura Ingalls Wilder’s home. Joe had opted to stay home, however, to catch up with a pal in the youth group who was on spring break. And for the trip, there would be snacks all around, no doubt, including cupcakes from Grandma. It was also supposed to rain, which was all the better. Collette managed to stuff Chinese and her computer programming books into her bag before leaving.

The evening before had been spent at the Silverspoon’s with OLeif and his father discussing the usual – theology, philosophy, world views, new ideas, and the lot. Meanwhile, Denae and Collette listened along, Denae encouraging smoked turkey sandwiches on soft rolls and potato chips to the hungry clan. And Collette leafed through a small book of trees from the late fifties. So while OLeif rambled on concerning his vision of the youth and the emergent church, Collette read of the relatives of bananas and lilies and of red ash, blue and green ash. It had been another long day, but such was life, and Collette was happy for it.
