A late wake-up call from Puck found Collette fixing oatmeal and snatching a pair of scissors from his hands poised above the blonde shag – something about, “Could I cut my hair, Mama? Oops…”
Fortunately, the blade seemed to miss as the steel sliced more air than cell.
Out the door again into tepid sunshine. Storms were not entirely out of the question.
Puck jumped around like a frog in his flip flops…
“God could make Himself into a blueberry bush. If he wanted to.”
Gloria returned from Schnuck’s to wrestle Puck, who was later joined by Izzy before lunch was served up from the grill – more platters of chicken and caches of bright green Brussels sprouts.
Collette carved into a slab of brisket over the stacks of genealogy meandering mercilessly into the 100’s. Accompanied by cold lime sparkling water. Theodore and OLeif talked heavy on the deck while kicking a large ball back and forth with Puck.
Fudge brownie chocolate ice cream.
Puck showered the flowers in the front lawn under mottled sun. Off came the Cardinals t-shirt to dry on the car hood while Puck exposed shark-white skin to the elements, reluctant at first, until he remembered that “Uncle Joe and Uncle Francis take their shirts off sometimes”. The young man was slimming down, stretching up, inching towards surpassing Collette at an age sooner than she probably could have expected. One of those not-so-far-away years.
While Puck’s apparel continued to dry in the driveway, OLeif flipped on the 2D version of “The Iron Giant”.
Before Izzy checked out for his shift at work, Puck tried a hand at roping him up with a spool of heavy white string. Then he dug out an old pencil box stuffed with antique cutlery, which Gloria allowed him to take home…
“I don’t know how I can repay you, Nana!” he declared.
“You don’t have to repay me, sweetheart.”
But Puck was insistent…
“I know! I can invite you to my birthday party! That could be my repay.”
Then Sebastian joined him on the floor by his beef plate.
Theodore and OLeif made plans to see “The Avengers” at 6:40.
