Yellow Car, No Returns
Thursday, July 21, 2005
Rose was picked up by Mom and Collette after 5-Day Clubs on Wednesday, full of bubbly laughter as usual. As they waited for her to arrive, Mom and Collette ducked inside Target to keep cool. The temperature was still 91, though the evening was already well underway. And so Mom bought them a Bavarian pretzel and Icee apiece. Meanwhile, Rose was on a roll discussing her day.
“Yeah, so we made Goodwin bring Bibles for the kids. And I’m giving them all one. Yellow car, no returns! I’m going to buy a chinchilla!”
Yes, Rose had a habit of bouncing from one topic to another remarkably fast. Although the yellow car business was part of a game she and her new friend (co-leader) had concocted. Whoever saw a yellow car on the road would blurt out – “yellow car, no returns!” Collette did not ask why, but she was amazed to find out just how many yellow cars actually existed on their ride back to drop off Rose’s friend off Highway 79.
“Rose, I know what you would be if you were just a normal object,” Mom said from the front of the car.
“What?”
“A pinball machine. “You’re always bouncing from one thing to another.”
And true it was.
