Youth & Their Happenings
Sunday, January 28, 2007
It was twelve degrees that morning, and would likely not get higher that 22 during the day.
And Lilli was due that day, although there was no guarantee that little junior would oblige and actually bring himself (or herself) out into the world that same day. Collette figured that they would be hearing word from Aunt Corliss sometime that coming week, calling from Kansas City after driving across state.
The whole day was just bitter, although the sun shone bright. Earlier in the morning before the sun had actually come out, snow snakes danced across the roads and parking lots.
At church after practice, OLeif led the senior high Sunday school, all twenty minutes of it (after Jimmy had finished announcements regarding the junior high retreat, the senior high retreat to North Carolina, the junior/senior high winter retreat (although it would really be in the early spring) to the Lake of the Ozarks again, the fundraiser/auction/talent show/dinner to raise money for the trips, the mission trip to the inner city in the summer, the rummage sale to raise further support, the parent/youth work day to finish painting the youth building and hanging blinds, the guys’ and girls’ discipleship groups the following Sunday, the youth Super Bowl party (also the following Sunday))… and it trailed off into oblivion.
When the junior high and senior high finally did split up for separate Sunday School sessions, the senior high discussed I Corinthians 7, regarding marriage, etc. and then creativity, before it was time for everyone to scatter to their respective places for the worship service.
Saturday morning, the senior high (after finishing helping at the Salvation Army), had purchased more paint for the youth building (including a bright blue for the bathroom) and had then attended part of Bob B.’s tae kwon do tournament, just before receiving his black belt rank that week.
After church that morning, OLeif and Collette spent several hours at the Silverspoon’s over lasagna and a viewing of The Illusionist, after the boys had left early to play at Mr. Tecumseh’s surprise birthday party.
They left shortly after the film had ended and after Theodore had been playing with Sebastian and his squeaky ball, which he could not catch for the life of him for a spell.
“What’s wrong with your catcher, dog?” Theodore asked him.
But he eventually caught on, and by that time, OLeif had recovered from his sleepy state, after having fallen asleep off and on during the movie.
Then it was off to youth where Jimmy was already waiting with two pizzas. A new girl, Tiger Eye, fresh from Georgia, was also waiting. Later, Augustus, Molly, Ben-Hur, Susie and Sunrise, Nacchianti, and Rose also joined the gathering.
“Where’s Joe?” Augustus asked Rose after she had walked in.
“He’s planning his wedding,” Rose said matter-of-factly, as everyone choked out their laughs. “That was his excuse.”
There were many good laughs that night over other ridiculous things, which was typical. Again – Collette’s source of weekly entertainment. Eventually, they got around to discussing various forms of racism, using James as a guide.
Later, after 8:30 had come and gone, OLeif dropped off Collette at the apartment before driving over to the McCrae’s to check out two violins, at Addicus’ request, that had come into his possession.
Another week gone, a tough week.
