Shallot Army
August 22, 2020
Sometime that afternoon I noticed shallot peelings spread across the living room floor…
“Hey, Yali…” I called him into the room. “Why did you peel that shallot?”
He planted both bare brown feet on the floor and crossed his arms over his chest. A band-aid was still spread across his face from earlier that week. He closed his eyes importantly and said, “They’re alive.”
“The shallots are alive?”
“Yes.” He nodded towards the kitchen. “They’re talking to their whole army.”
At that moment, he nudged a large white onion across the floor with his foot. As it rolled away, he explained. “And that’s the boss.”
