11:30, and the floodgates were opened. The occasional warm late spring rain greeted all grades released into the world of summer. But we lingered for awhile in Hans’ classroom. After the kids were scolded by a passing adult for tossing a ball back and forth across the room – the things I don’t think to chastise them for – they found other entertainment in the form of dressing Yali up with large sunglasses and a sparkly fan.
“Work it, girlfriend!” Heidi ordered him.
And that’s how the 2015-16 school year ended.
So with Third Grade in the books and exactly 81 ½ days of summer break ahead of us, we drove home for our first adventure: watching Oxbear seal the large crack in the garage after it had been mud-jacked.
Second adventure: Chick-Fil-A.
Third: another walk around the neighborhood, this time just for Puck and myself.
“It’s time to get my after-bones going again,” he told me.
“After-bones?”
“Yeah, getting back on my bike again to get my legs working.”
Wasn’t sure exactly where he came up with that phrase, but I got it. I’m pretty sure my own personal biking “after-bones” are non-existent. I haven’t been on a bike in years.
At dinner, I let the boys watch some shameless Korean boy band music videos. So they could put faces to their much-listened-to car playlist. They were riveted, but not necessarily impressed.
“How would you feel if you had to dance like that?” I asked Puck after awhile.
“If everyone saw me doing that on Youtube, I’d be embarrassed.”
Movie night commenced at eight o’clock. While we decided what to watch over a pan of Carrie’s homemade snickerdoodle blondies and an unopened jug of Hawaiian punch leftover from Puck’s birthday celebration, the kids took turns quoting about half of Canadian-made “Night of the Twisters”, an absolute Snicketts-family staple.
Eventually, “Sponge Bob” was suggested. It’s not an uncommon occurrence for almost 28 year-old Elmer to spend a few hours at home with a box of fruit roll-ups and a season of “Sponge Bob”. So he was definitely in.
One episode later, however, someone suggested jackbox.tv, so we blew some more brain cells by laughing over our stupid stick figure drawings on the television. One very productive Friday night.
