BAH-ZERK

A few minutes before Yali and I piled ourselves into the silver Fit for a 40 minute drive to Cardinal Glennon, I realized something. Yali’s carseat was not in the back of my car. It was in Oxbear’s, down in Clayton. So … while I reschedule the ENT appointment for two weeks from now, Oxbear drove home to finish his work day with us and to return the carseat. Yali and I still had places to go.

But not before he napped. While Yali snoozed in our room, Oxbear walked past me to his home office with a bag of Fritos and leftover onion dip from movie night.

“Don’t judge me,” he warned.

It’s often in the forecast but doesn’t always come through. Although today was an exception. After Yali and I dropped off his first post-adoption report at the adoption agency – and a couple of ladies ogled over him – we drove out to pick Puck up from school. And hit a few deluges in the process. We ran inside between downpours.

When Puck marched out of the gym, he yelled to us from down the hallway, “Today was BAH-ZERK!! IT WAS JUST BAH-ZERK! I had a stomachache and then I was fine and I thought I was sick but I wasn’t! IT WAS BAH-ZERK!”

On that note, we went back to the car just as an enormous blast of thunder cracked through the neighborhood.

“OHHHH MYYYY WOOOORD!” Puck shouted. Louder than the thunder.

The new Head of School kept the as-advertised parents’ meeting to 25 minutes that evening. I’m pretty sure part of that was just because he wanted an update on the game, and he knew where to get it.

“Ms. Silverspoon?” he caught me as I made a beeline for the door. “Score?”

It wasn’t pretty.

Meanwhile, I distracted myself with the note Puck had left me on his desk, including a laminated self-created cover sheet for his spelling book, which he had entitled: “Enchanted Toilet”.

I hit the road just before eight o’clock while the game was falling apart downtown.

“Stop for snacks,” Oxbear suggested.

Gouda, Cheez-Its Grooves, and a little “Filthy Riches” on Netflix as the game concluded and I had a hard time keeping my eyes open.
