Goodbye, Spring Break

Walking across a river somewhere north – iced over – breaking up as I went. A fast river, I gathered. Low gray skies. Wilderness, all sides. Near the coast, maybe. Fortunately I didn’t fall in before I woke up to find the thermostat registering 59 degrees, as we forgot to switch the A/C to heat before bed. Sometimes dreams make a little more sense.

Carrie-Bri informed the sibling group text early this morning of how Francis woke up for class. It’s always a bit of a show to see what, exactly, comes out of his mouth:

Carrie: “Francis, wake up.”

Francis: “BLAAAAAUUUGHH!!!”

Carrie: “Are you awake?”

Francis: “Yes, but have you heard about the giant cylinder? You can actually fit inside.”

Carrie: “Francis, you’re not awake.”

Francis: “Yes, I am. I know it sounds funny, but if you look it up, it’s there. A great big giant cylinder that you can fit inside. Unless you’re fat.”

This is Francis in the mornings. I guess heavy dreaming also runs in the family.

Meanwhile, Yali was sitting in his high chair with a plate of eggs – over-easy – and buttered toast. His vocabulary has been increasing lately. As I walked out of the kitchen to grab something, I heard his grunt-yelling behind me:

“Maw! Maw! Maw!”

“¿Qué, Joe?”

“Pan! Pan!” (Spanish for “bread”.)

He pointed to his toast and grinned, huge. One more word on the old list.

As the afternoon arrived and Puck continued revisions in his library, I got some work done on my laptop in Oxbear’s office. I could hear hammering coming from the living room, but there was no need to inspect. Just thumbtacks in the wall for Puck to hang library displays. More holes in the walls. I am often grateful that we don’t live in a fancy house.

Our evening wrapped up with another weather headache for the mama and a dance party for the three boys in our bedroom. Anything of a fragile nature in this house has long ago been removed, or destroyed.
